Q&A CAREER PANEL SPEAKERS
Kirsty Wyman - Educational Psychologist
I graduated from the DEdPsy course at the University of Bristol in 2017, and I now work for Somerset Local Authority as an Educational Psychologist. I work within a small group of schools to support their children and families through assessment, consultation and problem-solving. I also have a specialist role in working with Somerset’s virtual school, which support care-experienced children and young people, and lead on this work across the service.
Fintan Smith - Researcher at YouGov
I graduated with a BSc in psychology in 2022 from the University of Bristol, and I am now a researcher on YouGov’s political research team based in London. My day to day role consists of designing questionnaires to be balanced for both clients and internal / media work on various political topics; constructing samples to be representative of various groups; fielding questionnaires to these samples, using statistical packages, such as R, to analyse data, and interpreting, visualising and writing up findings for articles and reports.
Miss Annika N Flynn - PhD researcher, University of Bristol
I am in the last few months of writing up my PhD thesis which explores how food composition influences food choice and energy intake in humans as well as how eating contexts might impact body weight. Alongside my PhD research, I co-lead The British Feeding and Drinking Group Early-Career Researcher group which organises workshops exploring topics such as Open Science research practices and applying for grant funding. Prior to studying at the University of Bristol, I received a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Alaska Anchorage in the United States of America. In my free time, I enjoy cycling (with lots of coffee stops!) and reading.
Rachel Caddick - Third Year Trainee Clinical Psychologist
Rachel started out her career supporting “hard to engage individuals” at the Assertive Contact and Engagement. Later she took a role in 1625ip, working with homeless young people, before going on to work at Unseen, a support service for survivors of Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. Alongside this, she worked voluntarily as an assistant psychologist in the Hope Service, working with refugees and asylum seekers.
She is currently on placement in Perinatal Services and the Differences in Sex Development Service and has previously had placements in – Intensive Services, Older Adult Services, Core CAMHS, Specialist Drug and Alcohol Services & Specialist Leadership. She is part of the EDI Committee on the DClinPsy Course in Bath and an organiser of the Trainee Led Inclusivity Group.
Molly Kelly Lewis - Partnerships and Learning Officer
After graduating from the University of Exeter with a BSc in Clinical Psychology, Molly worked in NHS adult mental health services as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner. A few years ago, she transitioned to the charity sector, supporting and advocating for clients with complex health needs, and building partnerships with community organisations and health and social care professionals. Molly currently works with funded partners in her role as Partnerships and Learning Officer for a charity addressing health inequalities across the UK.
Ellie Macey - Assistant Consultant at Institute of Public Care
I studied Bsc Applied Psychology (Clinical), graduating in 2018. I began my career working as a research assistant at the University of Oxford. I collected outcome data for a multi-site clinical trial looking at the psychiatric care of older adults in general hospitals. I then worked as a research assistant in Oxford for a different trial, which looked at the efficacy of digital cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia in treating stroke survivors.
Since March 2022. I have been an assistant consultant at the Institute of Public Care (IPC), which is a unit specializing in public care within Oxford Brookes University. IPC does consultancy work and research for clients, including local authorities and charities. In my time being an assistant consultant, I have supported on consultancy projects, undertaken interviews, analysed data, contributed to rapid and literature reviews, and designed a lot of surveys!

Professor Laura Mickes

Professor Laura Mickes is a cognitive psychologist who investigates human memory. She earned her PhD in Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego. Leaving the sunny, blue skies of southern California for the grey, wet skies of the UK to take an academic position, Mickes currently holds a professorship at the University of Bristol in the School of Psychological Science. Over the last decade, her efforts have primarily focused on eyewitness memory.
